May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This observation began in 1949 by the National Association for Mental Health which is now known as the Mental Health America Organization.

Every May, MHA and other organizations interested in mental health plan activities, special events, and screenings to spread awareness about the importance of our mental health. And each year, every Mental Health Awareness Month is focused on a specific theme.

In 2017 the theme was Risky Business. The organization’s outreach focused on educating people about habits and behaviors likely to increase the risk of developing or worsening mental illness. These habits include prescription drug use, internet addiction, excessive spending, and marijuana use.

Fitness #4Mind4Body is this year’s theme. We know how important it is to be healthy. In fact, it’s most likely the most important thing to us in life for both ourselves and loved ones. Therefore we try to implement healthy habits everyday such as diet and nutrition, exercise, and getting enough sleep. All of these factors contribute to good overall health and fitness. In addition, these key factors contribute to happy minds and overall good mental health.
